She is also Director of the North West Centre for Advanced Drug delivery based in the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry at Manchester University. Before taking up the Harwell role, Jayne was Head of the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry at the University (2017-2023). Prior to joining the University in 2017 Jayne was Professor and Head of the Pharmaceutical Biophysics Group, Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, King’s College London (2003-2017) while concurrently serving as Chief Scientist at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (2007-2016) where she was responsible for promoting pharmacy and pharmacy science to other related professionals, to government and other policy makers, and in the media. Jayne was member of the Pharmacy Unit of Assessment for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and of Unit of Assessment 3 in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. She has also been very active in serving the science community where she has served on a variety of committees for scientific societies and grant-awarding bodies, as well as organizing innumerable scientific meetings and conferences. Of particular note was Jayne’s period as Chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC’s) Science Board (2018-2020). Jayne was awarded a Member of Order of the British Empire for services to Pharmaceutical Science in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours (2020).

Research interests

Jayne’s research focuses on improving the delivery of a range of therapeutic agents including drugs and genetic material using self-assembled nanomedicines, with special interest in producing nanomedicines containing difficult therapeutic agents and determining the detailed molecular architecture of advanced (nanomedicine) delivery systems. Jayne has used a variety of neutron techniques including small angle scattering and neutron total scattering and more recently in combination with complimentary X-ray techniques. In this quest, she also has an interest in understanding the interaction of drugs and genetic material with bio-membranes and has used neutron and X-ray reflectivity as well as neutron diffraction to greatly facilitate this understanding. She has been a member of a range of neutron beam time awarding panels as well as neutron review panels.
