Overview
I am a PhD student within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. I am also a PGR Rep for the Diabetes, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology division, within the School of Medical Sciences. I have interests in molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics and behaviour. My current research is centred around methylation, specifically mRNA methylation and its effects on circadian physiology and behaviour. I am supervised by Jean-Michel Fustin and located on the 3rd floor of the AV Hill building
Research interests
I am interested in examining the proximate causes underlying behaviour and the intricate molecular pathways involved in the diverse functions of proteins and the ultimate effects it can have on organismal health and fitness.
I am also interested in identifying and characterising the genes involved in epigenetic changes, gene expression and regulation, cellular signal transduction and disease development and progression.
Other research
My previous research investigated premature telomere recovery in zebra finches previously exposed to traffic noise. Traffic noise is presumed as a chronic stressor. Stress can result in a series of behavioural and/or physiological stress responses, one of which is the activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. Chronic exposure to stress can therefore result in a prolonged activation of this response, which can have detrimental effects on organismal health and fitness. One of which is its effect on telomeres whereby telomere attrition can be increased. Previous work by Dorado-Correa et al., (2018) found traffic noise to significantly reduce telomeres lengths, especially in post-fledging individuals. My research showed that removal of the stressor allowed these individuals to recover from premature telomere shortening.
