Biography
Miss Jiaqian Fan is a UKRI-EPSRC funded PhD candidate at the Advanced Biomedical Materials CDT (Dental Biomaterials), primarily based in the Division of Dentistry, School of Medical Sciences and Henry Royce Institute.
Jiaqian conducted her undergraduate studies in Clinical Dentistry at Central South University (CSU, Changsha, China) from 2012 to 2017. She obtained her Master's degree in Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) and completed a 3-year Standardised Residency (Orthodontics Specialist) Training in Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in 2020. During this programme, she visited the School of Dentistry, University of British Columbia (UBC, Canada) as an exchange student.
She served as Senior Clinical Specialist at Align Technology (Invisalign) before pursuing this PhD, which offered great exposure and collaboration in Clear Aligner Industry.
Her PhD project is primarily supervised by Prof. David C. Watts and co-supervised by Prof. Julie Gough and Prof. Nick Silikas. She acted as an EBL tutor for UoM BDS Dental Bioscience undergraduates and a PGR Rep for the Division of Dentistry. Currently, she also serves as a research assistant working with Dr. Marcia Borba in the Dental Biomaterials Lab.
During her PhD, she did a funded research placement at Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry, the University of Birmingham focusing on antibacterial testing of dental materials.
She was awarded the Academy of Dental Materials Student Travel Award to attend the ADM Conference 2025 in Panama.
