Biography

Jim Miles graduated with a 1st class honours degree in Physics from the University of Liverpool in 1980. He later obtained an MSc in Computational Physics from theUniversity of Salford and PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Manchester. Following work at the Meteorological Office on modelling storm cloud formation, and experimental research in novel anaesthetic delivery systems for BOC Medishield (now Datex Ohmeda), Jim joined the University of Manchester in 1987.

Within Manchester University Jim worked in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Manchester School of Engineering and the School of Computer Science where he was a Professor of Computer Engineering. During that time he held the roles of Associate Dean for Graduate Education in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and then Head of the School of Computer Science.

Jim retired in August 2019 when he was granted the honorary title of Emeritus Professor. Jim is a voluntary curator of the Department of Computer Science's collection of historical artefacts, documents and images.

Research interests

During my career I was mainly interested in nanomagnetic materials and devices for data storage and processing. Much of my research was devoted to micromagnetic modelling of materials for hard disk drives in collaboration with industry and a wide range of international universities.
