Before coming to Manchester John ONeill was professor of philosophy at Lancaster University. He has also held posts at the University of Sussex and the University of Wales. He is currently director of the Political Economy Institute. He is director of the MA in Political Economy. He is also a member of the Society and Environment Research Group and the Centre for Democracy and Elections. He is on the editorial boards of a number of journals including New Political Economy, The Journal of Applied Philosophy, and Historical Materialism. He has been involved in a number of UK and European projects on environmental policy.
John's research interests lie in political economy and philosophy, philosophy and environmental policy, political theory, ethics, and the philosophy of science.

Over the last five years John has supervised doctoral students working on: philosophy and economics; philosophy and technology assessment; intellectual property rights; Austrian economics and the ethical limits of markets; the political economy of micro-finance; and the ethics and economics of sustainability: workers' co-operatives; equality, liberty and property; the ethics of discounting.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
