After working in sales for a numbe of years, I started my academic career in 2009 with an undergraduate degree in computer science, where I came across machine learning in a 3rd year unit. The degree lead to a PhD at the University of Manchester in 2012 where I've been ever since, graduating in 2017. Since then I worked as a research associate for a few years, most noteably on a project using machine learning to automatically detect osteoporotic fractures in iDXA images, before accepting a teaching contract at the start of 2023. Since then I've been working on various courses, including the Maths, Stats and Machine Learning unit of our Clincial Data Science PGCert, and various units on the Health Informatics MSc we run in conjunction with UCL. I am passionate about how AI/ML can be used for the good of society, especially in healthcare, but also deeply worried about how it will actually be used in practice.
