Overview

Jon is a Laboratory Technician in the School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED) Laboratories at the University of Manchester. Their primary role is assisting and advising staff, students, and researchers in lab and field work. The role encompasses analysis, preparation and method development of principally environmental samples and sampling for elemental, nutrient, carbon and greenhouse gas analysis through a wide variety of methods and instrumentation.

 

Methodological knowledge

Jon has extensive experience with:

  • Trace element analysis by ICP-OES and ICP-MS
  • Carbon analysis with GC, TOC and CHNS/O light element analysers
  • Nutrient analysis by Ion Chromatography
  • Microplastics analysis including by FTIR
  • Environmental air, soil and water sampling
  • Light microscopy

 

Social responsibility

As sustainability champion, they're working on reducing the environmental impact of the laboratories through green chemistry, sustainability of consumables and equipment, and the reduction and recycling of waste.
