Accepting PhD Students

PhD projects

I am interested in supervising students for critical and interdisciplinary projects that draw on critical theory, philosophy, and sociology to study the workings of accounting in organisations and society.

Personal profile

Biography

I joined Alliance Manchester Business School in 2022 as a Lecturer in the Accounting and Finance Division. My work critiques the often assumed power of accounting to shape and change organisations and society, most recently by studying the impact of environmental accounting and counter accounts. Theoretically, my work is informed by a diverse range of critical theorists like Slavoj Žižek, Theodor Adorno, Pierre Bourdieu and Wendy Brown. My research has recently been published in Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Organization Studies, Public Administration and Financial Accountability & Management.

Research interests

I am interested in bringing a critical perspective to the study of accounting ideas and practices. I examine how these act as instruments of power and serve to reproduce inequalities and hierarchies in organisations and society. I am particularly interested in studying the misfirings of accounting, identifying its flaws and pointing out instances where accounting is far less powerful than we might think. To do this, I study environmental reporting, performance measurement and accountability systems, tax practices, and transparency disclosures.
