Kasandra Swiderska is a final year PhD Researcher at The University of Manchester, working in collaboration with industry. Her research interest lie at the interface between Optometry and Computer Science. She aspires to advance the healthcare industry, especially in the use of Artificial Intelligence. Key projects include: • Effect of repeated eyelid eversion on Meibomian glands • Diurnal and monthly variations of Meibomian gland structure • Software development for automated Meibomian gland detection • New imaging setup for Meibomian gland reflectivity measurement • Clinical evaluation of therapeutic Meibomian gland expression.
Kasandra is currently completing her PhD in Optometry under the supervision of Professor Philip Morgan, and due to submit her thesis in summer 2022. Her thesis title is: 'Dynamic characterisation of Meibomian gland structure'. Her main goal is to characterise changes in gland appearance and fill the knowledge gap on the relationship between gland structure and its function.
Prior to coming to The University of Manchester, she received an MSc in Optometry and a BSc in Optics/Optical Sciences from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Poland. She had the opportunity to study and work abroad, in Sweden, Australia and Spain, as part of her degrees. Having an academic experience abroad contributed to her personal and academic development by helping her to grow in global and cultural awareness.
