Personal profile

Overview

I qualified as a GP in 1991, and still work 1 day a week in a rural practice in Derbyshire. My research is based in the Health Policy, Politics and Organisations (HiPPO) group within the Centre for Primary Care in the Division of Population Health, Health Services Research and Primary Care. The group's research focuses upon the interaction between health policy and organisations within the health service, with a focus on primary care. The research takes a qualitative approach, and the group have pioneered the use of observation within NHS organisations. I am a co-lead for the Primary Care theme of the Greater Manchester CLAHRC. I am also a tutor on the MPH/MRes course teaching Health Policy. I am research lead for the Division.

Biography

I qualified as a doctor in 1985, and subsequently trained as a GP. After 8 years in practice I decided to return to academic work, undertaking a Masters in Applied Social Research followed by a PhD. My PhD research focused upon the impact of National Service Framenworks in General Practcie, and took an organisational approach, focusing upon the nature of general practices as small organisations. My research has subsequently focused upon the impact of national health policy on primary care organisations, including individual practcies and Primary Care Trusts. I still work 1 days a week as a GP in a rural practice in Derbyshire.
