Dr Kathleen Nolan obtained her first degree (BA hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford in 1988, and went on to complete her doctorate there in 1992 working on molecular aspects of the complement component properdin with Prof Ken Reid in the MRC Immunochemistry Unit. She stayed on in the Immunochemistry Unit for a further year funded by an MRC Human Genome Mapping grant and applied long range mapping techniques to extend gene mapping studies in the human MHC region. She then moved to the US to take up a position as a Harvard Research Fellow developing first generation chimeric T cell receptors for adoptive T cell cancer therapy. She returned to the UK in 1995 to join Prof Herman Waldman’s Therapeutic Immunology Research Group in Oxford, first as a scientist and then as a senior scientist, contributing through a variety of projects to the study of mechanism of immunological tolerance induced in mouse transplant models using antibodies and other such potential biotherapeutic agents with a view to future clinical application.
She has an established track record in teaching and in addition to supervising doctoral and project students in the lab was an established undergraduate immunology tutor and held college teaching lectureships at Oxford. In October 2012 she moved to Manchester to take up a teaching focussed lectureship in Immunology. She currently teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to other teaching roles she is currently Programme Director of the distance learning Master’s in Immunology and Immunogenetics and of the newly established BSc/MSci programme in Immunology.
