I am a PhD researcher at Manchester Institute of Education, working on the
#BeeWell Programme. #BeeWell is a youth-centred wellbeing research study and programme that has listened to the voices of more than 130,000 young people to understand what's important for their wellbeing.
Using this data, my research looks at the social determinants of mental health and wellbeing during adolescence and the processes by which factors in the school and neighbourhood environments in which young people grow up can act as risk or protective factors. These factors can broadly be grouped into the following categories: economic influences, social and community aspects, environmental and phsyical features, safety, and access to services. Understanding which aspects of the school and neighbourhood environments influence mental health and wellbeing is critical for effective prevention.
Alongside my PhD, I also lead strategic communications for #BeeWell, sharing #BeeWell's research and success stories with key stakeholders including local authorities, schools, partners, young people and policymakers, to drive engagement and highlight the importance of measuring and better understanding young people's wellbeing in order to create meaningful change and improvements to their lives. Most recently this has involved leading on the communications for the
Our Wellbeing, Our Voice campaign to lobby the government to include national wellbeing measurement as part of the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill.
Prior to starting my PhD, I studied the MEd Psychology and Education at The University of Manchester and was awarded a distinction. My dissertation focused on the mediating role of teacher-student relationships on the relationship between trait mindfulness and distress in adolescents.
I have extensive experience in stakeholder engagement and communications across a wide variety of sectors and organisations, from tech start ups, to healthcare organisations, to global blue chip companies. Most recently, I was responsible for internal and external communications and engagement for Research & Innovation at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
I am a teaching assistant in the School of Environment, Education and Development and have worked on the following units:
- Educational Research Methods and Design
- Introduction to Neuroscience and Education
- Psychological Perspectives in Child Development
- Cognition and Education
- Schools working with Children, Families and Communities
