Biography

Kejian Hou is a materials scientist and research technician at the University of Manchester with deep expertise in vacuum systems, nanofabrication, and advanced surface/interface analysis. After completing his PhD in Materials Science, Kejian transitioned into a senior technical role supporting the Advanced Functional Materials and Photonics Labs, where he plays a pivotal role in maintaining and upgrading experimental infrastructure.

Kejian has hands-on experience with a wide range of analytical tools, including XPS (HT, NAP, SR), NEXAFS, AFM, UV-Vis, PL, and femtosecond laser systems. He has participated in international synchrotron projects at Diamond Light Source, MAX IV, BESSY II, and ASTRID2, contributing to several peer-reviewed publications in surface science and biointerfaces.

In his technical role, Kejian leads the operation, training, and maintenance of gloveboxes (spin coaters, evaporators, sputterers), cleanroom, and safety-critical systems. He is actively involved in health and safety management (IOSH), induction of new researchers, chemical waste coordination, and procurement. His recent projects include developing laboratory protocols, implementing LEAF sustainability accreditation, managing cryogenic and vacuum infrastructure, and supporting photonic device fabrication.

Kejian is also contributing to the deployment of new instrumentation. He is passionate about creating safe, efficient, and collaborative lab environments that enable cutting-edge research.
