Currently Director of Undergraduate Education and Programme Director of the MSc in Periodontology. I have been in Manchester since 2012. Prior to that I was at Barts and The London for over 20 years where initially I taught Conservative Dentistry before returning to my first love of perio. I also undertook a variety of other roles which included: Head of the Centre for DCPs, Senior Clinical Tutor and Senior Tutor for Outreach.

I qualified from Kings in 1981 and after 5 years in the RAF did my MSc in Periodontology at Guys.

My research has centred around the theme of providing an evidence base for that which we do, as clinicians, chiefly by custom and practice.  Initially, this work related to the measurement of tooth preparation geometry in relationship to a variety of prosthodontic treatments and how this quality affects the final restoration, in particular in terms of its gingival contour and its implications. This was the theme for my PhD thesis, where a number of novel techniques were employed to measure the geometry of tooth preparation for metal ceramic crowns and its implications, namely; co-ordinate metrology, finite element and photo-elastic stress analysis. More recently, these techniques were employed to look at the implications of tooth preparation for porcelain veneers. Recent Masters projects have used this methodology to look at soft tissue response to periodontal therapy, particularly to identify sites at risk for recession.

I am currently the  Director of Undergraduate Education and as such have overall responsibility for our Undergraduate programmes. In addition I am Programme Director for the MSc (Clin) in Periodontology.
