Personal profile

Overview

Kylie is a Lecturer in Reproductive Immunology, within the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre at the University of Manchester. Her research interests are the role of the innate immune system in pregnancy, menstruation and womens health.

Kylie completed her PhD in 2013 at the University of Surrey, where she studied the effects of extracellular ATP in blood and lung derived dendritic cells. She then took up a post-doctoral position at the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, where she studied the mechanisms of impaired macrophage phagocytosis in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In 2019, Kylie was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the Alpha-1 Foundation, and moved to the University of Birmingham. This fellowship studied monocyte and macrophage function in AATD, a genetic cause of COPD. During her fellowship, Kylie studied neutrophil function in COVID-19, and recieved funding from the Dunhill Trust to study macrophage function in ageing and frailty. During this time, she developed an interest in the immunology of pregnancy, and obtained funding from the Preeclampsia Foundation to study decidual macrophage function in preeclasmpsia.

In September 2024, Kylie joined the University of Manchester as a Lecturer in Maternal and Fetal Health. Her research interests remain the immunology of pregnancy, as well as maternal and womens health.
