Personal profile

Overview

I research and teach on topics at the intersection of social, technological and environmental change. My current research is on the fast-emerging field of carbon dioxide removal and I currently teach on topics in environmental governance and energy geographies.

I joined Manchester Geography in 2021. I previously held appointments at the following:

  • School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia (in the Science, Society & Sustainability group) (2018-2021)
  • Munich Centre for Technology in Society (MCTS), Technical University of Munich (at the Chair of Participatory Technology Design) (2015-2018)
  • Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London (in the Centre for Invention and Social Process) (2012-2015)

Cutting across my research and teaching is an interest in concepts, methodologies and debates in the interdisciplinary field of science & technology studies (STS). Related to this, I have a longstanding interest in the practice and politics of participatory research/inquiry, and in creative experimentation with technologies of participation.

I'm currently working with the UK's National Hub for Greenhouse Gas Removal, oriented by controversies over including carbon removal in climate policy. As part of this work, I'm conducting ethnographic research around field trials of carbon removal methods and, in some cases, the public mobilisations they generate.
