Accepting PhD Students
Leandro Maio, qualified by MSc degree with honors and doctorate in Aerospace Engineering, begins his academic career by winning a research grant for graduates at the Dept. for Technologies of the “Parthenope” University of Naples. Afterwards, he is awarded with a scholarship at the Dept. of Aerospace Engineering of the Università degli Studi di Napoli "Federico II", where Dr Maio receives even his PhD. Subsequently, he is hired as a post-doc research fellow, position confirmed for a further three years. In this role he obtains the Italian “National Scientific Habilitation” as Associate Professor in the sector “Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering” and afterwards the habilitation for Full Professor. Later, Dr Maio becomes Assistant Professor, holds the courses "Complements of Aerospace Construction" and "Elastodynamics and Structural Health Monitoring Principles" and he is coordinator and scientific responsible of research projects, funded also through the challenging Italian programme “Progetti di ricerca di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale” (PRIN). Currently, he is Lecturer in Polymer Composites at The University of Manchester (UoM), where he is in charge of the Structural Health Monitoring/Non-Destructive Testing laboratory and holds lectures within the course “Deformation Mechanisms” and “Advanced Composites”. Thanks to his studies on the propagation of ultrasonic waves in solids and their exploitation for NDT&SHM, he was awarded seven scholarships for research and teaching abroad: three scholarships under the ERASMUS+ for teaching program, which allowed Dr Maio to hold courses for PhD students, two scholarships under the University program for European Project, a DAAD funded by the German government, and the Fulbright Research Scholar. Through these he was, specifically, visiting researcher and lecturer at five renowned institutions, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Goethe University of Frankfurt, University College London, UoM (where he is now), and the University of California San Diego (UCSD). In these institutions he was also invited to hold seminars on his research in NDT/SHM and has promoted partnerships through research activities still ongoing. Moreover, he has been promoter and responsible for the EU-funded bilateral ERASMUS+ agreement with the UCSD, aimed at the mobility of students and academic staff. To date Dr Maio promotes and curates numerous special sessions mainly regarding NDT&SHM in international scientific events.
