Personal profile

Biography

I am a Lecturer in Intercultural Communication in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. My research interests include urban multilingualism, heritage language maintenance, language and identity, micro-level language policy and ethnographic methodologies.

Before joining the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, I was Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Linguistics and English Language (University of Manchester), focusing on research and public engagement on Linguistic Diversity. My PhD project, which I completed in June 2021, draws on the example of Arabic in Manchester to explore and challenge notions of ‘language’ and ‘community’ in the globalised city. During my time as Research Assistant on the Multilingual Manchester Project (2014-2021), I conducted research on urban multilingualism and co-authored a series of reports and publications on linguistic landscapes, supplementary schools, and language provisions in the healthcare sector. I obtained my BA (Major: English and American Studies; Minor: German as a Foreign Language) from the University of Augsburg, Germany.
