Leonie Gaiser is a Lecturer in Intercultural Communication in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. Her research interests include urban multilingualism, heritage language maintenance, language and identity, micro-level language policy and ethnographic methodologies.
Before joining the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, Leonie Gaiser was Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Linguistics and English Language (University of Manchester), focusing on research and public engagement on Linguistic Diversity. Her PhD project, which she completed in June 2021, draws on the example of Arabic in Manchester to explore and challenge notions of ‘language’ and ‘community’ in the globalised city. During her time as Research Assistant on the Multilingual Manchester Project (2014-2021), Leonie Gaiser conducted research on urban multilingualism and co-authored a series of reports and publications on linguistic landscapes, supplementary schools, and language provisions in the healthcare sector.
