Biography

I came to the University of Manchester as a Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1976. From 1971-1976 I was a lecturer at the University of Sussex. Between 1969 and 1971 I was a Research Fellow of Magdalen Colllege Oxford and in the previous two years I was a post-doc at the University of Illinois.

I have served two periods  as Head of Department.

Research interests

  • Theory of disordered systems: glasses and spin glasses.
  • The effects of topology and geometry in condensed matter physics.
  • Dynamical problems in statistical physics.
  • The use of statistical physics ideas in problems outside physics.
