Overview

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Proton Therapy Physics leading the PRECISE research group at the University of Manchester and the Chrisite NHS Foundation Trust. I obtained a first class honours degree in physics and mathematics and a PhD in nuclear experimental nuclear physics from the University of Liverpool.  Following post-doctoral positions at Rutgers University in the USA, Brighton, York and Manchester in the UK I took up my current position in April 2015.   I have over 70 peer-reviewed, high impact journal publications including three nature articles, nine letters and four instrumentation and methods articles as well as being a contributing author to the "Design and Shielding of Radiotherapy Treatment Facilities" IPEM Report 75. My main expertise lies in radiation detection and measurement with my research interests covering the topics of range and dose verfication in proton beam therapy as well as imaging, ultra-high dose rate FLASH therapy and motion management.

I have vast expertise in monte-carlo radiation transport calculations and I'm currently a member of the international Geant4 collaboration in the hadronic models working group.  Before starting my post-doctoral position in Manchester I spent some time as the head of monte-carlo modelling for a north east based SME.  I'm the founder and managing director of Subatomic Simulations which is a small consultancy business developing monte-carlo radiation transport based applications for industry. I currently teach a number of monte-carlo related courses to industrial, government, health service and academic entities.
