Overview

Dr. Magda Hassan is an Assistant Professor at Alliance Manchester Business School since 2018. Previously, she held a similar role at Warwick Business School and served as a Teaching Assistant at Cambridge Judge Business School and the German University in Cairo. She earned her PhD in Management Studies (Marketing) and an MPhil in Innovation, Strategy, and Organisation from Cambridge Judge Business School.

Research interests

Dr. Hassan’s research explores marketing strategies in informal and emerging markets, micro-entrepreneurship, and the use of big data. Her work, published in leading journals like Marketing Science and the Journal of Product Innovation Management, focuses on impactful topics such as access inequality, gender roles in marketing, and digital supply chains. She has secured over £160,000 in research funding, earning awards like the Worshipful Company of Marketors Best Doctoral Dissertation Award (2015) and the Albert Page Best Professional Paper Award (2018).

Teaching

Dr. Hassan teaches undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive courses, including Marketing in Society, Marketing Management, International Marketing, and ESG and CSR. Her teaching ethos champions inclusivity, diversity, and respect for all learners. She believes, as Albert Einstein said, that, "Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think." Her teaching excellence has been recognized with a Fellowship at the Higher Education Academy multiple commendations for her engaging and impactful delivery.

Dr. Hassan also serves as Associate Head of Social Responsibility and Interim Associate Head for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at Alliance Manchester Business School. She is an external examiner for Cambridge Judge Business School’s MBA programs and contributes as a reviewer for top journals, including Marketing Science and the Journal of Product Innovation Management.

I am currently looking to accept new PhD students. If you are interested in conducting your research under my supervision please do get intouch. I am looking for candidates with the following skills and interests:

- Strong quantitative analysis skills (ideally using Stata or R)

- Topics: Informal markets, micro-enterprises, emerging markets, SMEs, strategies adressing global societal challenges, poverty reduction, inequality
