Overview

I am employed as a Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust/University of Manchester, Division of Cancer Sciences.  My areas of research interest are in hepatopancreaticobiliary and neuroendocrine neoplasms and I have published work in these subject areas as well as others (Central Nervous System tumours in particular).  I lead and participate in clinical trials and serve on data safety monitoring and trial steering committees for national and international clinical trials.

I am also the current lead of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society Centre of Excellence (2020 onwards).

Biography

I was appointed on July 1st 2014 as a Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology (University of Manchester/The Christie NHS Foundation Trust).  I treat patients with a diagnosis of hepatopancreaticobiliary malignancies and neuroendocrine neoplasms.  I did a 3 year clinical research fellowship in “Princess Margaret Cancer Centre”, Toronto, Canada (2011-2014) in Gastrointestinal tract cancers and Central Nervous System tumours.  I obtained my Certificate of Satisfactory completion of specialist training (Medical Oncology) from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.  I have Membership and Fellowship (2023) of the Royal College of Physicians of UK.  I also have a degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Pharmacology (National University of Ireland, Galway).

Research interests

Clinical and translational research in hepatopancreaticobiliary and neuroendocrine neoplasms; clinical trials, audit and meta-analysis.

Teaching

I previously taught and acted as a tutor on the MRes in Oncology and taught on the MRes in Experimental Cancer Medicine programmes.

I supervise Medical student APEP projects and I also assess Year 3 MB ChB Applied PEP oral presentations (University of Manchester).

I was an academic advisor to Medical students at the University of Manchester from 2014 to 2022.

I interview for Medical student entry (UCAS), University of Manchester.

I co-supervise PhD students.

I am a Peer Review Assessor as part of the Peer Review College, University of Manchester, which sits at faculty level and is responsible for undertaking peer review of teaching and learning activities in the faculty.

New Academics Programme (NAP) Assessor.

Completed American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Education Scholar's Programme (ESP) 2019-2021 (following this term, participants are placed on an education-focused work group to integrate learning sciences into ASCO programmes).
