The Mycology Reference Centre Manchester (MRCM) offers a highly specialised diagnostic service primarily serving Manchester, north of England and Scotland but also receives daily referrals from throughout the UK and beyond. We provide a wide range of specialised mycological tests and have a considerable research and development portfolio. The Mycology Reference Centre Manchester is a well-established, UKAS/ISO-accredited service providing an integrated conventional and molecular diagnostic service. The Centre was the first laboratory in the world to be accredited by the European Confederation of Medical Mycology as a Centre of Excellence in Clinical and Laboratory Mycology.

The laboratory is an integral part of The Manchester Fungal Infection Groups (MFIGs) which unifies NHS services and University of Manchester research and teaching functions, creating one of the leading centres for medical mycology in Europe. The Manchester Fungal Infection network is made up of 120 NHS doctors, Clinical Scientists, nurses and University of Manchester researchers. The MRCM laboratories are well equipped with a full range of analytical and automated platforms and enjoy the support of infectious diseases and respiratory clinical teams. The MRCM is a EUCAST Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Collaborative Laboratory and an European Fungal PCR Initiative Collaborative Centre.  The MRCM aims to continue to deliver a patient-focussed service with an international reputation and be a premier supplier of mycology diagnostics in the NHS. We are implementing ambitious plans for modernising and improving service delivery.

Malcolm Richardson is a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Medical Mycology at the Mycology Reference Centre, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust at Wythenshawe Hospital and an honorary Professor of Medical Mycology at the University of Manchester. In 2017 the Mycology Reference Centre became the first European Confederation of Medical Mycology Centre of Excellence (Diamond Status). Malcolm Richardson is an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Royal Society of Biology. His clinical and laboratory investigations have focused on the pathogenicity, diagnosis and epidemiology of superficial and systemic fungal infections. More recently he has applied his diagnostic experience to investigating the mycobiome of indoor environments using next generation sequencing. Malcolm Richardson is a NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre infection project lead.

Malcolm Richardson qualified in Medical Micriobiology (Mycology) (BSc. Hons., University of Hertfordshire, 1968 to 1972) and gained his PhD on Immune responses to Candida albicans from the University of Leeds in 1975. From 1975 to 1980 he was appointed as a MRC Post-doctoral Fellow, Department of Microbial Pathogenicity, University of Birmingham, to work on neutrophil interactions with pathogenic fungi and the development of assays to detect biomarkers of Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans. In 1980 Malcolm Richardson was appointed as the Principal Mycologist, Bristol Royal Infirmary and Honorary Lecturer in Medical Mycology, University of Bristol. In 1984 he became the Consultant Clinical Scientist in Mycology, Greater Glasgow Health Board, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Mycology, University of Glasgow. Malcolm Richardson was an Associate Professor of Medical Mycology, University of Helsinki from 1999 to 2009 before joining the University Hospital of South Manchester (now part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) to take up the position of Head of Service and Consultant Clinical Scientist in Mycology, and Honorary Professor of Medical Mycology, University of Manchester.

He has published over 450 original articles, book chapters and reviews and is the author or editor of a number of mycological textbooks and handbooks, many of which have been translated, including Fungal Infection in the Compromised Patient (1982, 1991), Slide Atlas of Fungal Infection (1985), Medical Mycology - A Practical Approach (1989), Medical Mycology: A Practical Guide (1991), Fungal Infection: Diagnosis and Management (1993, 1997, 2003, 2012), Therapeutic Guidelines in Systemic Fungal Infection (1998, 2001, 2003, 2007), The Pocket Guide to Fungal infection (2000, 2006), Fast Facts: Superficial Fungal Infections (2000), Fungal Infection and Critical Care Medicine (2008) and Illustrative Cases in Medical Mycology iBook (2016). His  h-index is 64. Malcolm Richardson is a frequent speaker and session chair at major international conferences in the fields of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, and medical mycology. From 2008 to 2014 Malcolm Richardson was the Editor-in-Chief of Critical Reviews in Microbiology. Current editorial activities include being Reviews Editor for Medical Mycology. Malcolm Richardson has served the International Society of Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM) in a number of ways: Vice-President (1991 to 1993), General Secretary (2003 to 2008), President-Elect (2012 to 2014) and President (2015 to 2018). Malcolm is an enthusiastic teacher and contributes to the University of Manchester's undergraduate and post-graduate infection programmes.
