Professor Mario Kafouros holds the Chair of International Business and Innovation at the University of Manchester (UK). He is the Senior Editor of the International Business Review (IBR), a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), and has served as a guest editor for various other journals, including Journal of World Business (JWB), Journal of International Management (JIM), and Global Strategy Journal (GSJ).
He has extensive industrial and academic experience in innovation, international business, and strategy and has held senior leadership roles in universities and research centers. Professor Kafouros is the former Head of Division (People, Management, and Organizations – PMO) at Alliance Manchester Business School, where he also held various other positions, including Head of the International Business (IB) Group and Associate Head of Research. He was the elected Secretary of the Academy of International Business (AIB UK&I) and served on its Executive Committee. Additionally, he was appointed as an adviser to the Commonwealth.
Professor Kafouros is also the former Head of the International Business Department at Leeds University Business School (UK). He has served as a member of the Faculty Executive Group at the University of Leeds, a member of the executive board of the Business Confucius Institute in Leeds, Director of Research in IB, and a member of the University of Leeds Cross-Faculty Impact Committee. He was responsible for the Faculty’s previous Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission and served as the REF leader.
Professor Kafouros has supervised 13 PhD students. His research, which draws from different disciplines such as economics, geography, sociology and law,focuses on the determinants of internationalization and the consequences of certain international strategies for firm competitiveness; the forces driving innovation and firm performance in the global economy; and the mechanisms enabling multinational firms to benefit from technological development. His research has received strong recognition in the form of:
(1) Over 7,200 citations, leading to his inclusion in Stanford’s Top 2% Scientists list.
(2) Best Paper Awards (e.g., Emerald Citations of Excellence Award 2015; European International Business Academy 2013, Academy of International Business 2010, and British Academy of Management 2008),
(3) About £3,600,0000 funding from research councils (e.g. UK’s Economic and Social Research Council ESRC, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council EPSRC) and organizations
(4) Publications in leading international journals such as Journal of Management (JoM), Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), Journal of Management Studies (JMS), Research Policy, Organization Studies, Human Relations, Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM), Journal of World Business (JWB) and British Journal of Management (BJM).

Professor Kafouros welcomes PhD applications on the following subjects: firm perfromance and strategy, R&D and global innovation, innovation in China and other emerging countries, theory of invention, internationalization of emerging country firms, institutions, political connections, alliances and acquisitions, economic geography, FDI, intangible assets and firm capabilities. He has also supervised 13 PhD students in the following areas.
