Biography

Mark Kambites obtained his first degree (2000) and PhD (2003) from the University of York. He held research fellowships in Canada and Germany, before joining Manchester as an RCUK Academic Fellow in 2006. At the end of the fellowship, in 2011, he became a Senior Lecturer, and was promoted in 2013 to Reader and then in 2016 to Professor of Pure Mathematics. From 2015-19 he served as Head of the Pure Mathematics Group. He is the central organiser of the North British Semigroups and Applications Network, an editor of the International Journal of Algebra and Computation, and currently serves on the EPSRC Strategic Advisory Team (SAT) in Mathematical Sciences. Research interests

Mark is both a mathematician and a computer scientist, interested in semigroup theory, tropical algebra and geometry, combinatorial and geometric group theory, formal languages and automata, computational complexity, parallel processing, cryptography and interactions between the above.
