Biography

Professor Matthew Gibson

Matthew Gibson (FRSC, FHEA) is a Professor, and Chair of Sustainable Biomaterials in the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Manchester. His team is based in both the Department of Chemistry and the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology. The team have broad research interests in deploying biomaterials to address important problems in biotechnology, healthcare, and sustainability. 

Matt obtained his Degree (2003) and PhD (2007) from the University of Durham UK, before pursuing postdoctoral research at EPFL, Switzerland. In 2009 Matt started his own group at the Univeristy of Warwick UK as a Science City Research Fellow. He was promoted to assistant (2012), associate (2015) and full (2016) Professor, joint between Chemistry and the Medical School. In 2023 his team was recruited to the University of Manchester. 

Matt has published >195 papers, delivered >100 invited lectures and several awards for his teams research. Matt has held back to back ERC Starter and Consolidator awards. Matt is co-founder and chief technology officer of Cryologyx Limited: a spin-out company commercialising cryopreservation technology. He has also filed many patents, which have been sucessfuly licensed. Matt is a former Royal Society Industyr Research Fellow (with GE Healthcare) and led the MRC iCASE (industry) PhD training in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research at Warwick.
