Personal profile

Overview

I am a Professor of Rheumatology and Director of Experimental Medicine at the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, University of Manchester. I am a NIHR Senior Investigator and at the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre, lead the ‘Disease complexity and multimorbidity’ cluster and within this, theme lead for ‘Next Generation Therapeutics’.

My clinical and experimental research programme comprises the following research themes: (i) PRECISion medicinE across the disease continuum to prevent and treat Rheumatoid Arthritis (PRECISE-RA); with a focus on personalised therapeutics in early RA and Difficult-to-Treat-Refractory disease (ii) CARDIOvascular pathology in Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (CARDIO-IMID) to identify patients at risk of CVD, optimal detection methods and shared mechanisms of CV-IMID comorbidity (iii) Improving therapeutics and cardiovascular outcomes in Systemic Sclerosis. In addition to clinical trials, I undertake complex observational studies and linked experimental investigation to identify prognostic, mechanistic and predictive biomarkers.

I am Chair of the NIHR-Versus Arthritis UK Musculoskeletal Translational Research Collaboration, which aims to support and innovate the experimental research landscape and deliver meaningful, multi-centre trials in the UK. I lead the Medical Research Council (MRC)-British Heart Foundation (BHF) UK CARDIO(vascular)-IMID (immune mediated inflammatory diseases partnership, bringing together 29 centres to deliver experimental studies in IMID-CVD and I am national lead of NIHR Bioresource rare disease ‘systemic sclerosis’. I have also informed multiple national/European guidelines in RA and SSc.
