Personal profile

Overview

I am a Professor of Rheumatology and Director of Experimental Medicine at the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, University of Manchester and Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds. My clinical and experimental research programme comprises the following research themes: (i) PRECISion medicinE across the disease continuum to prevent and treat Rheumatoid Arthritis (PRECISE-RA); with a focus on personalised therapeutics in early RA and Difficult-to-Treat-Refractory disease (ii) CARDIOvascular pathology in Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (CARDIO-IMID) to identify patients at risk of CVD, optimal detection methods and shared mechanisms of CV-IMID comorbidity (iii) Improving therapeutics and cardiovascular outcomes in Systemic Sclerosis. In addition to clinical trials, I undertake complex observational studies and linked experimental investigation to identify prognostic, mechanistic and predictive biomarkers.

I am Chair of the NIHR-Versus Arthritis UK Musculoskeletal Translational Research Collaboration; NIHR-BHF cardiovascular (CV) partnership steering committee member and lead of the national 'CARDIO-IMID UK Network'. I have been involved in several European (EULAR) task force initiatives; was Chair of the Scientific Organising Committee, EULAR 2015 and Abstract Chair for EULAR 2014.  I sit on several Versus Arthritis grant committees and on the editorial board of several journals.
