Personal profile

Biography

Dr Mehrdad Vasheghani Farahani obtained his BSc and MSc in Petroleum Engineering from Sharif University of Technology. Following his MSc, he gained hands-on experience in the oil and gas industry by working as a Reservoir Engineer at Tavana Energy Kish Company for almost 2 years.

In 2017, Mehrdad received the prestigious James Watt Scholarship from Heriot-Watt University and began his PhD in Applied Geoscience at Centre for Gas Hydrate Research, focusing on physical properties of gas hydrate-bearing permafrost sediments. During his PhD, Mehrdad developed a coupled geophysical-geothermal scheme for quantifying natural gas hydrates in frozen porous media. He also had the opportunity to conduct a part of his experimental research at Dalian University of Technology.

Upon the successful completion of his doctoral studies, Mehrdad started working as a Research Fellow at The School of Engineering, University of Warwick. His research at Warwick focused on developing viable techniques for visualising fluid flow and transport phenomena in porous media, aiming to provide fundamental insights into the pore-scale phenomena associated with solute transport in porous materials.

In 2023, Mehrdad joined the IMPRES research group, led by Professor Vahid Niasar, to work on the EPSRC-funded PINCH project. With a background and over 8 years of experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), pore-scale modelling, and experimental fluid mechanics, Mehrdad's research in Manchester is centred around establishing fundamental science and developing pore-scale modelling approaches for characterising and accurately predicting salt precipitation and CO2 injectivity loss in hyper-saline aquifers.
