Accepting PhD Students
I am a Lecturer and Researcher working across the Faculty of Biological, Medical and Health Sciences. I am currently co course Unit Lead for the Behaviour Change and Public Health module for the Masters in Public Health. I also am involved in undergraduate teaching within the Division of Dentistry as well as a supervisor for PGRs. I am primarily involved in research concentrating on a water fluoridation, carried out across Cumbria (CATFISH study). I am also involved in projects looking at child dental general anaesthetic, oral health in older adults, child dental health and bedtime routines, behaviour change and dental health, prevalence and severity of fluorosis and caries across the England.
I am the Postgraduate Research Tutor for the Division of Dentistry and welcome enquiries from those interested in research programmes (MPhil, PhD) in all areas of Dentistry.
Research Interests
My principal research interests lie in the field of dental public health and behaviour. I have investigated the complex casual networks and approaches to reducing need for general anaesthetics extractions in children in addition to the research currently being carried out on water fluoridation.
Future research is focused on implementing and evaluating the behaviour or service changes revealed to play an integral part in reducing the need for GA extractions/severe dental decay in children and exploring interventions that impact on a wider scale, i.e. child development, obesity, etc.
Work I am currently involved with through supervision of PhD students and collaboration with colleagues includes:
Using images to detect and quantify caries and fluorosis in both longitudinal and cross sectional research
Oral health care programs for older adults and health literacy in older adults
Bedtime routines and dental health in children
