Biography

Dr Mike Kennard is a Senior Lecturer in Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Executive Education Programme Director at Alliance Manchester Business School. Mike’s teaching, research and consulting interests centre on innovation management capabilities, organisational barriers to innovation and developing entrepreneurial growth strategies. He is author of The A to Z of Innovation Management and Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Mike has worked with a wide range of organisations including Airbus, Alliance Boots, Amey, Arriva, BAE Systems, the Civil Service, KPMG, General Electric, GKN, Intouch Group, Nat West, the NHS, Rolls-Royce, and Siemens. He is a regularly invited speaker on innovation, including events held by The Royal Aeronautical Society, Marketing Week, International Society for Professional Innovation Management, Institute of Materials, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Previously Mike was Programme Director for the MSc Management and MSc Advanced Engineering Management programmes at the University of Birmingham, MBA Director at Aston Business School, and an Innovation Research Fellow at Nottingham University Business School. Mike also worked for over 10 years in various senior technology management positions at Rolls-Royce plc, including Programme Manager for the Global Research and Technology Programme, and Programme Manager for the Trent 1000 Fan Module designed for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Mike holds a BEng and PhD from the University of Birmingham, and an MBA from Nottingham University Business School. Mike is also a Chartered Engineer, Member of the International Society for Professional Innovation Management, Member of the British Academy of Management, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Teaching and Learning, and Distinguished Fellow of the Teaching Academy.

Teaching

Mike has designed and developed BSc, MSc, MBA and Executive Education modules around the themes of Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, with full responsibility for curriculum design, teaching materials development, teaching delivery, setting and marking assessments, and provision of feedback. He has directly delivered over 450 lectures to over 2,500 students at the University of Manchester, University of Birmingham and Aston University, with typical student evaluation scores ranging from 4.5 to 5.0 out of 5.0.

Activities and esteem

In 2020 Mike founded and co-chair the British Academy of Management (BAM) Working Group on Post-Experience Education, and this has now grown to over 40 members from 25 UK and international universities. The purpose of the Working Group is to develop scholarship and practice around teaching part-time experienced students, for example Executive MBA, Executive Education, Senior Leader Apprenticeships, and DBA programmes. The Working Group is affiliated with two BAM Special Interest Groups; Leadership and Leadership Development and Knowledge and Learning, and also with BAM Management Knowledge and Education. Mike has also developed a sustained track record of invitations to deliver guest talks, lectures and webinars to external audiences in the field of innovation mangement.

Impact

Mike has led several high profile open and custom executive education programmes, with responsibility for programme design, curriculum development, faculty liaison, client liaison and quality assurance at the University of Manchester and also at the University of Birmingham in his role as Programme Director for Business Partnerships.
