Dr
Accepting PhD Students
After reading Civil Engineering with a first class honours BTech degree, with a Gold Medal (in Surveying), Dr. Ahmad earned his Master's and PhD degrees, from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (India)
and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (India), respectively. Dr. Ahmad was awarded scholarships for his postgraduate studies (Master's and PhD).
Dr. Ahmad has experience of working in
industry and has worked as a Geotechnical Specialist for a total period of approximately three years in: Consulting Engineering Services
(I) Pvt. Ltd, Sargon Geosynthetics Ltd. (now a part of Maccaferri Environmental Soultions) and Dar Al-Handasah Consultants.
Dr. Ahmad works on a set of diverse yet very interconnected research themes of sustainability, climate change and environmental problems in the realm of Geotechnical–cum–Geoenvironmental Engineering. His
recenet PhD graduate has successfully demonstrated that by using a polymer slurry as a support fluid during a bored pile construction, an enhanced pile capacity is achieved - thereby using less concrete;
and being sustainable; another student is curently working on modelling the effect of climate change on long-term integrity of earthen dams. Dr. Ahmad is also very keen
to explore use of agriculture waste (like sugar cane ash a.k.a. bagasse ash) in geotechnical infrastructure projects. He also works on geotechnical earthquake engineering aspect – a topic
very topical for the nuclear power industry in the UK.
His research activities include:
geotechnical earthquake engineering including, seismic and blast resilience of tunnels, sustainability and climate change in geotechnical
infrastructure projects, soil and cargo liquefaction, application of finite element and finite difference methods to the
geomechanics problems, reinforced soil, ground engineering and hydrodynamics.
He is on the editorial board member of the International Journal of Geomechanics, published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) USA.
Dr. Ahmad is also very passionate about teaching and keenly focusses on finding innovative ways and methods. He uses a blend of modern technology and trditional approaches in his teaching activities.
He is also the developer of 2 Android Apps titled: Earth Pressure Coefficient; and Soil Stress Increment - both available on Google Play.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
