I am a Senior Lecturer with responsibilities for teaching, research and administration. I teach undergraduate and postgraduate units of learning, and supervise post graduate research students at Masters and PhD level. I have extensive experience in curriculum development and am interested in research evaluating the impact of interventions, both clinical and educational, on patient care quality and safety.
I am the School Erasmus Exchange Programme Coordinator; managing the School's European educational links. Previous admin roles include:- Chair CPD Exam Board (2009 -2013); Quality Assurance and Enhancement Officer (2002-2005) and School Examinations Officer (1995-1999). I have been a reviewer for Nurse Education Today for 20 years and am on the Journal Editorial Board; I also review for The Journal of Nursing Management and am on the Editorial Board. I have acted as Editor for two Special Issues on Patient Safety.
I am a Senior Lecturer in Nursing; I hold responsibilities for research, teaching and administration. Previously I held a Joint Appointment between the School and Central Manchester HealthCare (NHS) Trust with responsibility for Professional Practice Development. Prior to that I held various clinical appointments in acute and primary care settings. I have three degrees from the University of Manchester at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level:
My research interests are patient care quality and safety. I am also interested in organisational issues/ factors that impact on patient care quality and safety, for example nursing workforce: recruitment and retention and organisational culture.
My main research approaches are evaluation methods. I have been involved in clinical research that aims to improve patient care quality and safety and research that evaluates the impact of education on practice. In addition, I am interested in both the processes and outcomes of Education and Practice Development/ Quality Improvement/ Organisational Change initiatives.
I am a member of the Healthy Ageing Research group (HARG). Recent research activities include:

Recent completed PhDs include: 'A case study of the safety culture amongst nurses in a hospital in Northern Spain', 'The impact of computerisation on the role of the nurse in Taiwan' and 'A Case Study exploring the implementation of the role of the community matron'.
My methodological knowledge and experience are mainly qualitative; however I have adopted quantitative and mixed methods as appropriate to the research question.
