Biography

Dr Kidd has a wealth of experience working in various professional mechanical engineering roles for companies including ABB, GE and BAE Systems. His special interests include AI / Machine Learning, Reliability Engineering & Mechanical Design.  In his role as Deputy Director, Dr Kidd managed the BP Engineering Management between 2007-2017 for the University of Manchester with budget responsibility for circa £10M.

Dr Kidd has been awarded Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in recognition of his significant responsibility and contribution. Up until 2019 Dr Kidd was an active BSI committee member for TC251 providing expert input to the development of ISO55000 (Asset Management Standard). Dr Kidd is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and NED for an International Engineering Training Charity. Dr Kidd is a member of DS/001 Dependability BSI eCommittee.

Dr Kidd has over 20 years of experience developing Artificial Intelligence Engineering Applications. His Doctoral Research between 2002-2006 focused on Automotive Reliability with special emphasis on the application of Machine Learning to Condition Based Maintenance.

Dr Kidd has supervised over four hundred UG/PG dissertations and fifteen PhD projects to successful completion (many of these students were based in industry working on real application challenges).

In his current role as Senior Lecturer in Reliability Engineering within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester, Dr Kidd is the Unit Leader for a range Reliability, Risk, Maintenance and Mechanical Engineering Design Courses. He is actively involved in leading and delivering Teaching, Research, Consultancy and CPD in all of these subject areas.
