Overview

Nick Matthews completed his PhD at the University of Manchester in 2021 supervised by Professor Phil Shapira and Dr Laurence Stamford. Nick’s research interests centre on the sustainability of emerging technologies, with particular focus on the field of synthetic biology, building on his background in the biological sciences. He is interested in questions of policy and governance relating to how emerging technologies can be mobilised to promote sustainable development. This research led to the development and application of a framework for Constructive Sustainability Assessment which aligns analytical sustainability assessment methodologies with governance frameworks like responsible research and innovation.
