I am Sharil and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Manchester from Malaysia, currently pursuing my studies full-time. With a decade of experience as a secondary school teacher, I major in TESOL and language teaching. My current research project, on the other hand, investigates how various factors, including ethnicity, social class, and geographical context, shape students' experiences and access to English language education in my home country. This inquiry stems from my interest in the intricate dynamics of language learning in diverse environments.
I am also particularly intrigued by the work of Bourdieu’s and how they provided me a nuance understanding of our current educational settings. My aim is to explore the dynamics of these factors and how they intersect in relation to language learning, focusing on how English proficiency impacts students' self-perception and social interactions, and ultimately social mobility.
I am committed to enhancing the understanding of English language education in multicultural contexts and welcome opportunities for collaboration and discussion with fellow researchers and educators.
