Personal profile

Overview

I am a historian of everyday life, with a particular focus on the history of anarchism in Spain and Argentina. I am also interested in migration, transnationalism/trans-localism, and spatial history.

I hold a PhD in History and an MA in Modern History from the University of Leeds, and a BA in Hispanic Studies from University College London.

My PhD and forthcoming monograph (under contract at the University of Illinois Press) explore anarchist ‘prefigurative politics’ in Argentina and Spain between 1890 and 1930. Bringing together archival sources and oral histories, this study shows how anarchists reflected their ideological beliefs through their use of space and time; through ‘informal’ resistance such as humour and satire; and through their relationship to the family. It also highlights the transnational and trans-local connections that, in many ways, were central to anarchists' everyday lives during this period.

At the University of Manchester, I am a Simon Research Fellow, working on my second book: a history of anarchist children in New York, Buenos Aires, and Barcelona. Previously, I was a Research Fellow on the ERC-funded ‘Dictatorship as Experience’ project at the University of St Andrews; Senior Editor at British Online Archives (where I co-produced and co-presented the ‘Talking History with British Online Archives’ podcast); a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Leeds Arts & Humanities Research Institute; and a Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Cultural Studies at the University of Manchester.
