Biography

Dr Nazia Chaudhuri is a respiratory physician with a specialist interest in interstitial lung disease (ILD) service. She has been the lead of the ILD service at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), United Kingdom for over 9 years and has recently re located to Northern Ireland, where she aims to take up an academic post at the University of Ulster and Altnagelvin hospital. She remains an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester as the academic year 3 lead for the undergraduate medical school.

 

She graduated from the University of Leeds with an honours degree in medicine and a BSc honours in genetics. She performed a PhD and published her work looking at the cellular interactions and signalling in response to infection and air pollution. She has publications and reviews related to her PhD work and continued with her research interests as an NIHR Clinical lecturer.

 

 

As an ILD specialist, Dr Chaudhuri has developed the local ILD service by enhancing the delivery of care by establishing day case model to reduce waiting times, creating a clinical database and ensuring a presence on the internet by developing a website, twitter and Facebook page. She has been instrumental in setting up and delivering a regional North West and Northern ILD network.

 

She is the principal investigator on a number of clinical research trials (>20 over 5 years) in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and is the UK Chief Investigator of a major clinical trial on progressive ILDs and a trial in IPF. She is collaborator on a number of grants exceeding £5 million and has co-authored 41 peer reviewed articles in 5 years. She is also co-applicant for a British Lung foundation grant for a study in Sarcoidosis.

 

Dr Chaudhuri has published her experience in prescribing antifibrotics and delivering MDT care and has presented many abstracts pertaining to IPF, antifibrotics and the importance of a multi-disciplinary team approach at all major respiratory conferences. She is chair of the British Thoracic Society (BTS) interstitial and rare lung disease specialist advisory group and a member of the BTS Research and Scientific committee. She was chair of the North West Thoracic Society from 2018-2022. She is also on the European Respiratory Society ILD long range planning committee and is a medical adviser for the British Lung Foundation.

Dr Chaudhuri is actively involved in Undergraduate medical education and postgraduate training

Research interests

As part of my PhD I looked at the role of cell signalling and networks in response to diesel exhaust and infections. I have published my work in peer reviewed journals.

My current interest is in Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).

I am the principle investigator (PI) of multile phase 2 and 3 clinical trails in IPF (PASSPORT; Gilead trial; EPOCH). I am chief investigator of 3 clinical trials (INBUILD, Zephyrus and ATLAS)

I have established a Respiratory Biobank for ILD Patients.

I am Collaborating with Researchers at University of Manchester in basic science research in IPF.

I am collaborating with researchers at the University of Liverpool on a study investigating genes and biomarkers in ILD.

I am also the clinical  ILD lead to the Respiratory Disease Translational Research Partnership (TRP).

I have presented >30 abstracts at all Major Conferences in last 5 years and have published peer reviewed papers in my area of expertise

 

 

 

Teaching

I am academic 3rd year lead for Manchester Medical School

I am a member of the association for the study of Medical Education.

I am undertaking a postgraduate certificate in Medical Education at Keele University in April 2021.

UNDERGRADUATES:

I am an academic supervisor at the University of Manchester Medical School.

I also have a regular teaching committment to third year medical students who rotate through the respiratory department. I am a third year firm lead and supervise 5th years in their specialty placements. I also supervise APEP students. I also perform the respiratory Theme based Discussions.

POSTGRADUATES:

I have organised and delivered the CMT and FY1 foundation programme respiratory teaching.

I have organised and delivered speciaist training days on ILD

I am an educational and clinical supervisor of many trainees.

I organise the only annual Interstitial Lung Disease Course in the UK.

I have spoken and presented at RCP Education Days on ILD (2019, 2020 2022) and ERS on many occasions 2018, 2021
