Personal profile

Research interests

Tien-Dung's research centres on improving the sustainability of construction and building materials through the development of smart and novel cementitious binders with high performance and durability. His work focuses on the use of industrial by-products and carbon sequestration. He is interested in studying reaction mechanisms, microstructural development, and mechanical performance of novel cement and concrete materials.

Biography

Tien-Dung Nguyen pursued a Ph.D degree in Civil Engineering at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan. His doctoral studies involved the innovative transfer of industrial by-products into a sustainable cementitious binder. After obtaining his Ph.D degree in 2014, he worked as a Research Fellow at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, until November 2020. During his research fellowship at NTU, he improved the mechanical and durability performance of carbonated MgO concrete and Na2CO3-activated slag concrete via the enhanced hydration and carbonation mechanisms. He joined the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Civil Engineering of the University of Manchester as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in December 2020.

His professional experience is primarily in the development and characterization of novel cements and concretes. His research activities contribute to developing sustainable binders through the novel use of waste materials and carbon sequestration. Of current interest is the use of graphene in enhancing the mechanical properties and durability performance of concrete structures.

Social responsibility

He serves as a reviewer for Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, Journal of Construction and Building Materials, Journal of Building Engineering, and Journal of Materials and Design.
