In his research Niels studies violence and abuse, socioeconomic and health inequalities, and the family, and he is a core member of the Violence, Health, and Society Consortium (https://vision.city.ac.uk/).
Niels has applied methodological expertise in the statistical analyses of survey and administrative data, with substantive areas of expertise include analyses of (domestic) violence and abuse, gender dynamics, family structures and transitions, and economic inequality.
He leads projects on how domestic violence and abuse is related to labour market outcomes and health outcomes for the Violence, Health, and Society Consortium (https://vision.city.ac.uk/). Niels has published on how intimate partner violence is related to victim-survivors' physical health, well-being, and employment outcomes. Different types of intimate partner perpetrators have differing health and well-being impact for victim-survivors. Domestic abuse may result in job loss and time off from work, which is affected by the types of violence and number of types of violence experienced. Lastly, his research also covers adolescent domestic abuse and its predictors and consequences as well as service usage of victim-survivors. Engagement with stakeholders is central to his current work.
Additionally, Niels investigates how to integrate data across survey and administrative sources, and has written multiple studies on the measurement and conceptualisation of violence in surveys and administrative sources, how they are or are not comparable, and how our understanding of violence is affected by these measures/conceptualisations.
In earlier work, Niels has researched gendered relationship dynamics show how economic inequality within and between couples are linked to partner relationship quality and relationship transition using longitudinal panel data.
