Personal profile

Biography

I am an Architect and Urban researcher with passion about Development of the Built and Natural Environment. I joined the University of Manchester as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at NERC Digital Solution Programme in 2022, where I am contributing to a user-centric approach that aims to bring natural environment data in the UK (and other social, economic and health data) to users’ doorstep. My research has been focused on mapping vulnerability and resilience of communities to climate and socio-economic pressures in cities. This includes research on geospatial mapping of social capital networks, climate change vulnerability mapping in cities and development of nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate resilience in cities. My PhD in Built Environment was centred on mapping social capital networks of climate vulnerable grassroot economies in Egypt.

Prior to joining University of Manchester, I worked on €4.6M ERDF-funded IGNITION Project (led by GMCA and 12 leading partners in the UK), delivering an award-winning IGNITION NbS Living Lab at the University of Salford. My PhD research on Social Capital Networks was also developed into £200 AHRC-funded CRAFT project tackling the resilience of SMSEs industrial networks in Damietta, Egypt. Other research I worked on includes the urban regeneration of Manchester Ship Canal, climate emergency planning for Rasheed, Egypt, and ESRC Manchester Festival of Research.

I previously worked as an Assistant Lecturer, teaching Architecture and Urban Studies in various institutions including Cairo University, American University in Cairo (AUC) and AAST in Cairo. I took on roles as Graduation Project Coordinator, Workshop/Conference Organiser (in Egypt, Lebanon and Germany) and Lead Rapporteur at the UN-Habitat’s EUF 2015 (Egypt Urban Forum); in addition to volunteering on several development projects with the British Council in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon.
