Biography

I did my first degree in Sociology and History at the University of Keele and went on to do a PhD in Sociology at the University of Durham.

I am a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Manchester.

Research interests

Specific research interests:

My main research interests lie in the area of the relationship between morality, ethics and religion to social and political theory and practices. I wrote the first book length study of the philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre which not only sort to survey aspects of his work but situated it in relationship to a broad range of sociological issues. I am also very interested in the sociology of intellectuals especially in relation to moral and ethical and religious issues. I am particularly interested in sociology as ethical criticism.I am also interested in situating moral and cultural change in relation to economic historical and comparative civilizational sociology.

Current research projects:

I am currently preparing a project on the sociology of intellectuals as bearers of moral and ethical resources and identities.

I continue to work on the intellectual implications of Alasdair MacIntyre’s philosophy for the social sciences.

I am also working on a project on the reltionship between marxism and religion.

Teaching

I am very happy to supervise work in the areas of social theory, religion, sociology of intellectuals, sociology of ethics and morality, economic, historical and comparative sociology especially in relation to moral and cultural change.
