Overview

My current area of research involves a series of diagnostic test accuracy Cochrane reviews on dental caries and oral cancer. This follows on from previous reviews completed on the screening and diagnosis of oral cancer and the Cochrane review of water fluoridation. Other reviews I am involved with are behaviour change for periodontal disease, screening tests for endometrial cancer, estimating provider requirements in workforce planning models and the benefits of orthodontics.

I have also completed primary research, most recently a cross-sectional study with matched control investigating the prevalence of fluorosis in adults in areas with fluoridated water. During my PhD I completed a series of studies including:

  • A diagnostic test accuracy study which assessed the efficacy of Dental Hygiene-Therapists screening for caries and periodontal disease,
  • A comparative accuracy study of Dental Hygiene-Therapists ability to screen for potentially malignant lesions,
  • A feasibility study assessing the recruitment and retention of patients to a study where routine dental examinations are performed by Dental Hygiene-Therapists.

Qualitative projects have been completed which investigated barriers and facilitators to role substitution in general dental practices (HS&DR 11/1025/04) and evaluated an eReferral management and triage system for minor oral surgery referrals (HS&DR 11/1022/15).
