Professor Scapens supports the research of PhD students and other colleagues. He also delivers courses on case study and qualitative research methodology for doctoral students in the Business School as well as seminars on institutional theory and management accounting for doctoral students in accounting.

Research interests

Current research interests are in the field of management accounting including: processes of management accounting change and resistance to the implementation new systems; the changing nature of management accounting practices and their impact within business organisations; performance measurement systems and their use in the integration of global organisations; the use and effects of information technology on management control and performance management systems; the role of case study research methods; the theoretical contributions of institutional theory and structuration theory.
