Accepting PhD Students
I work with large administrative and primary care databases such as NHS Digital data and the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) to investigate healthcare services, epidemiological and pharmacoepidemiological research questions.
I graduated from the University of Bologna with a Degree in Statistics, Demography and Social Sciences in 2004 (Honours with distinction).
In 2010 I completed a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology from the University of Leeds funded by Cancer Research UK. The focus of my PhD project was to develop statistical methods for the analysis of genome-wide association studies with a focus on melanoma. During this time, I became familiar with large databases, machine learning and advanced statistical methods.
In 2011 I joined the Centre for Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety Research at the University of Manchester. Here I worked for several years using large primary care databases such as the Clinical Practice Research Database. My main research focused on the epidemiology of psoriasis and I have been involved in large projects such as the Identification and Management of Psoriasis and Related Comorbidities (IMPACT) NIHR programme grant, and the Global Psoriasis Atlas, where I was the leading epidemiological researcher.
Between 2019-2022 I have worked within the Centre for Primary Care (NIHR School for Primary Care Research) in healthcare services research and simultaneously contributing to multiple projects including the epidemiology of psoriasis, cardiovascular disease and opioids prescribing and multimorbidity.
In September 2022, I have been awarded the Dean's Prize Fellowship by the University of Manchester with a project on the epidemiology of multimorbidity.
I currently co-supervise four PhD students across the University.
