Biography

Personal History and Service:

  • A native of Belfast, I gained my BA (1987) and PhD (1993) in Classics at Sidney Sussex college, Cambridge, and - after a brief stint there as Junior Research Fellow and Director of Studies in Classics (1992-94) - I joined the Department of Classics & Ancient History in Manchester in 1994, becoming Professor of Latin in 2004.

  • Member, Editorial Committee, Journal of Roman Studies, 2012-18
  • Chair of the Council of the Classical Association (UK), 2013-19
  • Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, Editorial Board Chair, 2016-

Research interests

Research Interests and M.A. / PhD Supervision Areas

I offer graduate supervision in late Republican and early imperial literary culture, with special emphasis on: 

  • Late Republican, Augustan, and early Imperial Poetry.
  • Ancient epistolography, especially the letters of Pliny the Younger.
  • Classical Commentaries.

    Current research projects:

  • Commentary on the Epistles of Pliny the Younger, Book  6 (CUP)
  • The Cambridge Critical Guide to Latin Studies (CUP), co-edited with C.L. Whitton
  • Man of High Empire: a Biography of Pliny the Younger (OUP)
  • PI and Co-director (with Andrew Morrison): AHRC-funded "Ancient Letter Collections" Project
