Stephen Todd

Stephen Todd (MA, PhD, Cambridge, 1985) joined the Department in August 2000, after two years as Junior Research Fellow at Fitzwilliam College Cambridge (1985-87), followed by thirteen years at the University of Keele as Lecturer and (from 1996) Senior Lecturer. He was promoted to a Readership at Manchester in 2001, and to a Professorship in Ancient History in 2006.

He has held visiting research positions at Wolfson College, Oxford (visiting scholar, 1991), the Center for Hellenic Studies, Washington DC (stipendiary Junior Fellow, 1995/96), Clare Hall, Cambridge (Visiting Fellow, 1997), and the University of Texas at Austin (Visiting Professor, 2009). Other externally-funded awards held while at the University of Manchester include a fellowship from the Loeb Classical Library Foundation (Aug-Dec 2016) and a British Academy Senior Research Fellowship (Jan-Dec 2017), both for his current major project, the second volume of a multi-vol. Commentary on the Speeches of Lysias (the first volume of which was published by OUP in 2007). Since Jan 2018, he has also been co-investigator in the AHRC-funded Genealogies of Knowledge project (directed by Prof Mona Baker, Translation Studies), where he has particular responsibility for the Greek and Latin corpora, and particular research interests in the constellation of concepts involving the body politic.

Stephen was for ten years a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Hellenic Studies, and is currently a member of the comitato scientifico for Dike: rivista di storia del diritto greco ed ellenistico. He is a regular contributor to the Symposia of the Gesellschaft für griechische und hellenistische Rechtsgeschichte. He was among an international team of scholars who were invited to participate in the transcription and/or interpretation of the five pages of new speeches (Against Timandros and Against Diondas: for the latter, cf. his paper in BICS 2009) by the Athenian Orator Hypereides that form part of the Archimedes Palimpsest.

• Greek Social and Legal History.

Other research and teaching interests include:

• Slavery (Roman as well as Greek).
• Roman Law (from an Athenocentric perspective of considerable ignorance), and
• Historiography (esp. Thucydides).
