Overview

Sandra is a doctoral researcher and PhD at the School of Environmental, Education and Development (SEED), UoM in collaboration with the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA, Portugal) with an awarded Scholarship from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT). She is working on the project "Abrupt climate changes during the Last Glacial and deglaciation in SW Iberian Peninsula" using a land-sea direct comparison. Dr William Fletcher, Dr Abi Stone and Dr Filipa Naughton are the supervision team of this split-PhD programme between UoM/SEED (UK) and IPMA (Portugal).

Prizes and awards

Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) - funded radiocarbon analysis  (Radiocarbon Facility - East Kilbride)

Project: "Past climatic extremes in SW Iberia"
-NERC radiocarbon award: 2136.1018, 6 AMS radiocarbon dates, GBP 3,012

-NERC radiocarbon award: 2199.1019, 32 AMS radiocarbon dates, GBP 16,064

“Abrupt climate shifts in SW Europe during the last glacial and deglaciation” and scored it as 8 on the NERC facilities grading scheme with the recommendation that full support should be provided.

 

Research interests

The research is related to the following Science Portuguese Foundation (FCT) funded projects:

- CLIMHOL - Holocene climatic variability in the North Atlantic and adjacent landmasses: land-sea direct correlation (PTDC/AAC- CLI/100157/2008)
- ULTImATum: Understanding past climatic instabilities in the North Atlantic Region  (IF/01489/2015)
