Biography

Following graduation (B.Sc. Hons and PhD) from Aberdeen University way back in 1980, I have held academic appointments at Imperial College (1984-1990), Cambridge University (1990-97), Fellow of Magdalene College (1990-97) and a Visiting Professorship at Newcastle University (1998-2000). In 1997 I joined Invensys Brook Crompton as Head of Research responsible for advanced motor technologies before returning to academe in 2000 with an appointment at UMIST.

After a short spell as the Head of the Power Conversion Research Group in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, I was appointed Director of the newly-formed Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre on "Electrical Systems for Extreme Environments".

My professional appointments include past chairman of the IEE Professional Group PG1 (Electrical Machines) (1997-2000), first chairman of the Executive Board of the IEE Professional Network - Power Conversion and Applications (2000-2003) and I have recently been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the new IET Journal "Electrical Systems in Transportation" (2009 -).

Research interests

My general research interests lie in the area of design and analysis of electrical motors, generators, drives and actuators using analytical or computational electromagnetic methods. Particular interests currently include induction machines and superconducting/low-temperature technologies in the industrial, marine, aerospace, and renewable sectors. My research output includes a large number of journal and international conference publications, three have been awarded IEE journal publication premiums and two IEEE prize paper awards.
