Personal profile

Overview

  • I am a Professor of Dental Education and Global Oral Health and Academic Clinical Lead for the Oral Medicine Teaching Programme at the FBMH, University of Manchester in addition to being a practising Honorary Specialist Oral Physician at the Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT).

  • I am the inaugural Lead for Social Responsibility in Dentistry and Global Oral Health Initiatives at the University of Manchester. I am a senior examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons, England and also a member of founding examiners group for two examination diets.

  • I have lectured in many disciplines including Anatomy, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Global Health, T&L pedagogies and CPD programmes both at national and international universities and other global institutions and have been invited more than 20 times as a guest or a keynote speaker for home and International Conferences. I have over 20 teaching and learning integrated translational Medicine publications in peer reviewed Journals.

  • I have received many national and international awards and accolades for my leadership, teaching, and innovation in education. Recently I have been awarded triple Fellowships from three National Academic and Professional Institutions, Advanced Education Ltd (NTF), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FFGDP) and College of General Dentistry (FCGDent), for my significant and sustained contribution nationally and globally.

  • I have great interests in developing innovative sustainable students led flipped Learning pedagogies, exploring various social responsibility concepts related to community-based learning, blended flexible teaching- learning and in globalising teaching innovations.

  • My global leadership in community - outreach teaching and learning demonstrates my exceptional commitment to Service Learning – that is combining learning goals and community service in ways that can enhance both student growth and the common good. My pioneering concept of Humanising Dentistry was instrumental to introduce and embed Service-Learning pedagogy in the Manchester Dental Curriculum with the vision of addressing/combatting dental health inequalities both in Manchester and globally while improving the students learning experience.

  • My proven leadership in organising international CPD programmes has helped me to pioneer and lead the Global Online Learning Forum (GOLF), a platform to share our knowledge and skills with hundreds of global health care professionals, particularly those from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) which resulted in impact reaching thousands of people in Asia and Africa. Working in true partnership with colleagues around the world has driven me to build and lead a team successfully, engaging in educational empowerment and post-war capacity building in Sri Lanka.

  • My future vision is to take my rich experience to lead and build locally and nationally on the renowned Manchester reputation and continue to drive it further to greater International clinical and academic leaderships and partnerships
