Overview

Shuaishuai Wang is a Lecturer in Digital Media and Culture at the University of Manchester. He holds a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Amsterdam. Shuaishuai's research centers on the intersection of platform studies, critical algorithm studies, and queer media. Much of his research has been devoted to understanding queer communities in both queer-focused (e.g. dating and livestreaming apps) and mainstream social media (e.g. Twitter and Douyin). 

Shuaishuai is the principal investigator of two university-funded projects: "Douyin Data Economies" (CNY 100,000) and "Algorithmic Configurations of Sexuality" (EUR 30,000). His work has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals such as New Media & Society, Big Data & Society, Social Media + Society Media, Culture & Society, and Information Communication & Society. In addition to his scholarly publications, Shuaishuai also writes for media organizations, including The Conversation and Sixth Tone. 

Prior to his current appointment at the University of Manchester, Shuaishuai was an Assistant Professor of Media and Communication at Xi’an Jiaotong - Liverpool University (2022-2023) and a Lecturer in New Media and Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam (2020-2022).
